Reno Gayla Film Festival Benefit
        The Patio, Reno's gathering place and the Reno Gayla Film Festival have teamed up for a benefit on Sunday August 1 at 2pm.  Suggested donation is $10.00
      There will be food. movie trivia and discussion on the movies to shown at this years event set for October 16 at the theatre in the Joe (Joe Crowley Student Union) on the University of Nevada campus.


Miss Pridefest contest August 6
    
Miss Natasha Foxx the current reigning Miss Pridefest will host the Pridefest pageant on Friday August 6 at Club Neutron beginning at 10 pm.  There is a $5 door charge.
      Contestants will be judges on showing their pride (presentation), personal interview, talent (which is to be six minutes in length) and evening gown.  Contestants are being sought and will be judged by a panel of judges. For more information contact Natasha Foxx at qqbubbles808@gmail.com

 

NLA-NNV Domestic Violence Seminar
      The National Leather Association's Northern Nevada chapter will host a domestic violence seminar at the Evelyn Mount Community Center (1031 Valley Road, Reno) on Sunday, August 1 at 5:30 pm.
        The event is open to the public and is part of the national organization's project to spread the word about domestic violence, especially in same sex relationships.

2010 Reno AIDS Candlelight Memorial Held

        Despite the fact several times the 2010 Reno Aids Memorial was referred to as the 27th annual International AIDS Candlelight Memorial, which it was not, members from all segments of the community  as a whole came together to honor those affected and infected with HIV/AIDS at the First United Methodist Church in downtown Reno on Sunday July 18. Reno has held a Candlelight Memorial for 21 years.
          The event featured speakers and performers before he traditional AIDS Candlelight walk from the Church to the Reno Arch along Virginia to the River Walk and back to the church.
           This year's event honored the memory of local HIV/AIDS activist Tom Ruble. Republican Jim Gibbons even signed a proclamation declaring July 18 as AIDS Candlelight Memorial Day, a first for a sitting Nevada Republican governor.

 

 

Reno makes the B.A.R
 as a travel destination

      The Biggest Little City made headlines in the B.A.R. (Bay Area Reporter) San Francisco's GLBTIQ weekly publication as the "city" celebrates Pride for the 40th year. The article was researched and written by freelance reporter Heather Cassell.  Here is a link to the story:

BOC to host commUNITY parade event
   
The Build Our Center Board has placed applications for entries in the CommUNITY parade and celebration on its website fro easy access. Entries in to the widely anticipated pride parade ate $20 for non profit organizations and $40 for business and other groups. Deadline for applications is July 29 at 5pm.
      The parade will take place on Saturday August 14 at 10am from Ralston and West First, heading east on West First to West Street and ending in front of West Street Market

Utility Players get set for season three finale
The Muscial at for the Siena July 29
   
 Reno homerun hitting Utility Players will close their third season with  The Utility Players, the Musical at the Siena Hotel Ballroom as part of Artown 2010.  Tickets are available at Salon 7, Prism Magic and the Melting Pot. Ticket at the door are $15.   There will only be one performance of the show.

Reno Gayla Film Fest Benefit August 1
       Movie Trivia will be the theme of the day as the Reno Gayla Film Festival teams with The Patio, Reno's Gathering Place to benefit the film festival set for October on Sunday August 1.  Food and games get underway at 2pm. A suggested donation of $10 is being asked to help defray the costs of putting on the festival at the theatre in the Joe (Joe Crowley Student Union) at the University of Nevada
    

A Day in the Park Gay Artist Show
Packs the 5 Star Saloon
      La Bussola owner and eclectic artist, not to mention cupcake goddess, Meredith Tanzer and Joe Guffey teamed up to bring seven local gay artists together for a month long art exhibit as part of Artown 2010 at the 5 Star Saloon.  A reception was held on July 8 which packed the historic 5 Star Saloon in downtown Reno. The seven artists, including Tanzer, Joe Guffey, Eddie Reynoso, Stenna Shipman, Susan Morris, Jeff Standley, and Veronica Williams displayed their works along the walls of the bar.  The exhibit will be up through July 31.
      The new event sparked interest in gay artists and art. Tanzer had help with creating the park atmosphere through Nevada Backyard and Steven Blake.


ACLU-NV produces domestic partner brochure

     
The American Civil Liberties Union of Nevada Foundation (ACLU-NV) has produced a Domestic Partners brochure. Domestic Partnerships became law in Nevada on October 1, 2009 after the Nevada Legislature over turned Republican Governor Jim Gibbons veto of SB 283 granting rights to same sex and unmarried partners.  The brochure in .pdf format is available for download by clicking on the picture of the brochure to the right.
